165 Male Transition

Program Description

The Jacksonville Bridge gives male inmates an opportunity to get their lives back on track. The Transition Re-Entry Center is a Therapeutic Community that provides intensive substance abuse treatment and value added services to men with a remaining sentence six to twelve months. The foundation of the program is the Therapeutic Community Concepts, which are essential to maintaining a drug-free lifestyle in social contexts. With clinical supervision, this peer-led, peer-driven environment encourages the men to become active participants in their recovery. Each program participant follows a multidisciplinary treatment plan customized to meet his individual needs.

Our substance abuse treatment, diverse courses, and value-added services teach problem solving, critical thinking, conflict resolution, and recovery maintenance skills. The program offerings at each facility vary to best meet the needs of the persons served.
TJBTC also offers the T.A.I.L. S Program – a betterment program for inmates; Teaching Animals and Inmates Life Skills (T.A.I.L.S.). This program gives rescued dogs a second chance at life. Many of these dogs were survivors of fighting rings. The dogs are trained and socialized to become pets and valuable family members. The inmates assist the dogs in rigorous training, which includes skills such as learning to sit, roll over, stay, and agility training, kennel training, and leash training. As an inmate in this program they interrupt, redirect and reinforce behaviors in order to change the way the dogs interact with others. This program does not promote violence, intimidation, or fear but rather tender love and care. There are three positions: The Handler, The Care Giver and the Trainer. The program is twelve weeks in duration. The inmates receive a certificate of completion and a formal graduation is held for the inmate and the dogs. Once that is complete, the dogs are placed for adoption. All medical care, food and supplies are provided through sponsorship of community providers. As of August 17, 2016, nineteen (19) inmates have received certificates in the T.A.I.L.S. program and thirteen (13) dogs have been trained and adopted into their “fur”ever families.
